There’s something wonderful about having an opulent bathroom to relax and unwind in at the end of a hard day, and you may be surprised to learn that you can create a luxurious bathroom without breaking the bank.

By being savvy about where you shop and what items you spend a little more on, you can design a bathroom that will be the envy of all your friends. Here are a few must-have features in a luxurious bathroom.

Roll top bath

Firstly, you can’t have a luxury bathroom without a freestanding bath and there’s nothing more opulent than one with a roll top. For something that’s truly special, consider a tub that has one end deeper than the other, as this will allow you to have a really good soak.

You can even get roll top baths with a pillow fitted at the deep end, giving you somewhere comfy to rest your head. What’s great about this kind of tub is the range of styles they come in nowadays – everything from period pieces to baths with angular, contemporary lines are on offer.

Counter-top sink

If you’re creating a luxury bathroom, you’ll want to have more than one standout feature, so investing in a counter-top sink is a great move. This kind of basin looks fantastic when positioned on an uncluttered surface.

Depending on the design scheme you’re going for, you can opt for a glass, ceramic or stone basin. Glass ones look amazing in a contemporary setting, while a ceramic sink can fit in with any decor, as long as you choose an appropriate shape. There are curved rectangular models, angular square sinks and sleek round basins, giving you lots of options.

Taps and showerheads

This is one of the areas where it pays to spend a little more to get something that’s top quality. Having cheap taps can really let you down when it comes to creating that opulent environment. Buy faucets in a design that fits in with the rest of your bathroom; if you’ve gone for simple fittings, these can be a great way to add a touch of style to the suite.

It’s also worth investing in a large showerhead, as these certainly introduce a sense of luxury and are lovely to shower under. If you’ve got the space for a walk-in shower enclosure, add this to your bathroom design. These create a wonderfully open feeling in a bathroom and are the epitome of luxury.

Practical storage

One thing that will detract from the sense of luxury in your bathroom is clutter, so make sure you’ve planned where you’re going to keep all those spare towels, toiletries and grooming gadgets. If you’ve chosen a counter-top sink, you can use the space underneath it with a stylish cabinet.

Depending on the space you have in your bathroom, you could also opt for a larger standalone cupboard with plenty of shelves to store cleaning products, medication and other toiletries – meaning they are still easily accessible when you need them.

Lighting

Another key component of any luxury bathroom is subtle lighting. Dispense with the fluorescent overhead light if you can and instead pick several small halogen spotlights that are positioned around the room to provide illumination. Use them to highlight particular aspects of the space – such as the bath or the sink – and make sure the eyes are drawn to the most striking features.

You can always add some wall lights in unusual lampshades if you want to have mood lighting to create a more relaxed atmosphere when you’re in the tub, and you shouldn’t underestimate the value of candles dotted around the bathroom for a truly decadent feel.
