Design Divas: Beverley Birchall from FDL Design and Love Your Interiors

This week I’m really thrilled to introduce a business mum who is passionate about design and interiors. Beverley runs 2 successful, well established businesses and has loads of great tips and experience to share with anyone wanting to start up their own business.

What’s your name? Beverley Birchall

How many children and old are they? 19 & 22

What is the name of your business? FDL Design Partnership Ltd &

What is your business and when did you start it?

Interior Design Business started in 1989 (Sole trader) took on business partner and became a limited company in 2004.

Online Interior Accessories Store launched in 2010

What was the inspiration behind your business?

A passion for style in fashion and interiors was always on the cards with a mother who designed and tailored beautiful clothes for private clients. From the moment I owned my first home I was hooked on creating beautiful yet comfortable and practical homes

Can you share 3 positive aspects about being a business mum?

1-      Working flexible hours to fit in with my boys as they have developed from babies to young men. They still need a lot of attention !

2-      Having the ability to make your own decisions and be in control of your own destiny.

3-      Knowing that your successes are all a result of your own hard work ! 90% of our business is repeat business or recommendation.

Any downsides?

You never switch off totally. Even on holiday you capture inspirational features and décor and file them in your memory until you can scribble it on that notepad that you should always carry with you but manage to forget!

How do you keep motivated?

Every client and every project is different and so new challenges keep me motivated. I am extremely lucky that I still get enthused about my job!

Would you change anything you’ve done in building and developing your business?

I wouldn’t have spent on advertising in magazines as you don’t see the returns unless you can do it on a regular basis.

I wish we’d taken the plunge and moved into an office /studio earlier.

What tips would you give anyone wanting to start their own design/craft/interiors business?

Follow your gut feelings .

Set yourself a budget for pattern books and stick to it as it is all too easy to get carried away when you see all the gorgeous new collections!

Customer service is of paramount importance and builds you a good reputation which means happy customers, repeat business and recommendations.

Doesn’t Beverley’s passion for what she does shine through? Thanks for sharing your experiences with us Beverley!
