So the blog is full of makeovers, new products and room reveals this week. Today is no exception as I’m showing off our youngest daughter’s new bedroom. As part of our house renovations, we have moved our main bedroom to the top floor, and moved Miss R from her box room to our old bedroom. This room has been reshaped to allow space for new stairs but it’s still a really good size for a bedroom and can hold a double bed and large wardrobes, still with plenty of space to play. It’s not overly styled. This is a room where she wants to play, and wants to be surrounded by her toys, books and treasures. She’s placed a lot of the pieces just how she wants them. It’s a real little girl’s room.
Miss R is almost 9, so we wanted this room to be Disney (or other) character free, in colours that would grow with her over the next few years. She liked my idea of a mint and grey colour scheme and loved the wallpaper choice. I’d been lusting over some Ferm Living wallpaper for a while, and managed to find some on sale in Sweden and had it sent over.
Just so you are aware, this is how part of the room looked whilst the renovations were happening, when the new wall was being installed. The black wallpaper has been removed, and the whole room is lighter and brighter than it ever was before.
The new paint colour is called Clouded Pearl 1 which we had mixed by Dulux. It’s a very subtle grey, which seems to shimmer in the light, and look more blue and sometimes more pink, depending on the time of day. Actually all of our paint has been from Dulux on this renovation project and it’s been great; I can’t fault it at all. You can still get Dulux paint mixed at Homebase, or online of course.
We kept the double bed in here as we’re hoping to use the room as a guest room too when grandparents come to stay. She can go and bunk in with her sister when this happens. The shelving unit happily houses all of her books, and her precious Lego Friends collection (the top shelf has been left empty to house Santa gifts) and a few teddies.
One very cool addition is the beautiful Goose Feather pendant light from Furnish.co.uk. How lucky is this 8 year old? It looks just like a paper lampshade but it’s coated in goose feathers and when lit it almost glows. Miss R thinks it looks like a cloud above her bed. It’s fun, quirky and contemporary and makes a real statement for her in this room. You can’t see it but we have given her the Sengled Bluetooth Speaker light encased within the shade, so she can play her music from her iPod and control the light too. She’s in heaven.
The wall art above the fireplace we chose together from the Not on the High Street site. I’d been doing quite a bit of window shopping on there for a project recently and we saw these and fell in love with them. That deer head is cute too, although a little smaller than we anticipated. Still it makes a lovely display on the fireplace wall.
Then, her new addition is the Eames Elephant from Vitra. Part of the Black Collection, a collection of new and classic pieces in shades of black, the Eames elephant is a design classic, usually produced in a variety of colours. In black it works well with our contemporary bedroom, with a nod to Scandi style, and Miss R can use it as a table or extra seat when friends come to play.
Designed by Ray and Charles Eames in 1945, it was originally made of plywood but never went into full production. Now it’s manufactured in plastic and is a sturdy toy for its intended audience. We are already very fond of our elephant friend. The whole room still needs that ‘lived in’ feeling (or should I say messy bedroom look that all 9 year olds have!) but we are thrilled with the space. It was a big deal to remove part of this room for the new stairs but it’s worked out really well I think. And Miss R is absolutely thrilled with her new room.
