How to Create a Laundry Setup that Doesn’t Wreck Your Rental

Featured Partner Post

Renting is great until you try to do adult things like laundry without making your place look like a glorified storage unit. You’ve got rules, limited space, no renos allowed, and zero patience for lugging a bag of wet socks down three flights of stairs to a shared laundry room that always smells weird (well, that’s if you’re even lucky to have that).

Honestly, trying to go to a laundromat can get pretty expensive, and handwashing everything is off the cards too. Sure, space might be an issue, but believe it or not, you can probably have a decent laundry set up as a renter. But where do you even start with such an endeavor?

Small Spaces Can Still Work

Don’t have a dedicated laundry room? Yeah, that’s super relatable. Actually, most renters are out here working with awkward hallway corners, random nooks next to the fridge, or that one cupboard that’s too shallow to be useful for anything, well, until now. So sometimes that little laundry space might not be as glamorous like the ones you see all over Pinterest.

But of course, it can work, you just need to think outside the box a bit. For example, stack your machines if you’re allowed. Use slim shelving. Get a drying rack that folds flatter than your willpower on laundry day (which is easy enough). Even a hanging organiser over the back of a door can handle pegs, clothes, and all those tiny things that never seem to have a home. Sure, extra space would be nice, but not everyone has that, so you need to use imagination instead.

Just Hide the Chaos

Alright, so what’s the secret to making your laundry space not scream “temporary living situation”? Well, all you really need to do is just hide it. Yep, that’s right, just tuck it away, and pretend it’s not there until wash day comes around. Alright, now this sounds easier said than done, especially since washing machines don’t have wheels. Yeah, that’s true, but you could look into a freestanding washing machine and dryer cupboard.

Sure, you need to have room for it, just enough for the style and variation you want, but it’s definitely doable. If you have a closet, that’d be great; otherwise, maybe a curtain could work too. But overall, there’s no damage or landlord drama.

Why Not Make it Cute?

Laundry might not be fun, but that doesn’t mean the space has to be depressing. Sure, it depends on where this little laundry area is, but regardless, you should still make it feel decent enough. For example, stick-on tiles? Yes. Matching storage tubs? Do it. How about a tiny peg rail for hang-drying socks like you’re in some Scandinavian lifestyle blog? Oh yeah, absolutely.

If you really wanted to, you could even throw in a little diffuser or a scent bead hack, oh, and on Etsy, you can find plenty of cute laundry room printables. So you could even hand up a couple of them for that extra cutesy feeling. But overall, you don’t need to overthink it too much; again, there’s plenty of great ideas on Pinterest you could look into.
