So, it’s been nearly 5 months since I started this family home interiors blog and it’s been an amazing time I have to say. I didn’t have the faintest clue how it might take off, but of course I hoped for great things! You have to aim high don’t you?
One of the biggest surprises is being a Finalist in the MADS 2012 awards. This one I did not see coming and has totally knocked me sideways because it really feels like recognition for what I’m putting together on the blog. Thank you so much to everyone who may have voted for me. What started as a love affair with gorgeous modern interiors is turning into a platform to showcase wonderful products and great business mums making and selling them. Of course we all want some kind of acceptance and recognition for what we’ve achieved and being one of the Final 5 in the Best Home category has given me the nod that I’m doing the right thing. I’m really looking forward to the Awards ceremony in September. I want to meet lots of other Finalists, network and meet the faces behind the words. And I’m looking forward to a night away in London in a lovely hotel, and the chance to dress up in a glam frock and drink sparkly all evening long.
So what goals did I have when I first started writing Love Chic Living? Well, I wanted some readers. Goal number 1. Yes, readers are good, definitely worth having a few. Goal number 2? Build up a little following and build a niche blog where readers can find all kinds of gorgeous, modern, beautiful products for their family home. You’ve probably guessed by now that I run my own business separate to the blog (check out more on my About page) and so I do have a commercial drive for the blog; it will act as another income stream for me in the future if I can get it right. And that brings me to Goal 3? Set up an online shop on the side of the blog promoting and selling lots of lovely home interior products. This one, I haven’t yet finalised but it is on the way. Watch this space, it will be here shortly. There are a few more goals, but they are perhaps a little more private and I’m not sure I’m ready to share them just yet. That’s maybe another post another time.
At the end of the summer I’m going to review where I’m at. Blogging is time consuming, in fact it consumes every part of you! Many a night I fall asleep thinking of my next post, or next opportunity, or how or what I should be doing next. It’s not just about the blogging, if it were it would be simpler. But it’s all about Twitter, Facebook pages, Google+, Pinterest, SEO, pr’s, follow/no follow links and so much more. There aren’t enough hours in the day to do all of this, and run another business, and look after the family too, so choices have to be made. Don’t worry I do feed the children, well most days anyway. You do have to know when to stop and you must manage your time online carefully and cleverly.
All those people that think they’ll make a quick buck from blogging are sorely mistaken. Like any business it takes time and effort to set it up and get it right, but with blogging, no matter why you’re doing it, you have to love the writing. You have to love finding new ideas, putting them down on paper, figuratively speaking, and then sharing them with the wider online community. If you don’t love that, you won’t succeed and you won’t have the will to carry on when the going gets tough.
It feels like my journey has just begun. But I’m getting the hang of this now. I’ve discovered a huge, incredibly talented community of bloggers that I had no idea existed. I’ve been to a blogging conference and almost lost my mojo and then got it back again! I’ve made some great contacts and have some lovely experiences coming up with some top brands. I’ve met some amazing people who do amazing things, and I’m constantly in awe of the reach and impact that blogging can have.
No matter what happens at the MADS ceremony in September, that nomination has played an integral part in my blogging journey so far. And I’ve got a brilliant excuse to go frock shopping! Long may this journey continue.
