Cuprinol Spray and Brush for Fences and Sheds

Today I’m discussing the Cuprinol Spray and Brush Paint System.

Our garden fence has seen better days. It’s been 10 years since we did the major garden renovation and put it up and I’m ashamed to say we’ve only painted it once, and even then we didn’t give it two coats.

So it’s looking a little (well, a lot)  shabby. And some of it looks like it might fall over. It really needs replacing but with #ProjectAttic about to commence, all of our spare cash is being ploughed into that. The garden will have to wait until next year we think.

However, we thought it would be worth our time and effort to spruce it up and make it look a little tidier.

The Cuprinol Spray and Brush System – How it Works:

I’d been offered a trial with a Cuprinol Spray and Brush, and was kindly given a tin of Cuprinol Garden Shades. Now in the past I’d always gone for a lovely bright colour but decided this time to tone it down and opted instead for a 5L tin of Seasoned Oak.

The Cuprinol Spray and Brush is a 2 in 1 system, combining both the spray and a brush allowing you to paint in less than half the time of using just a brush.

Cue a bright and sunny Sunday afternoon of painting.

Firstly, set the system up and pour in the paint. I thought this might be tricky but actually, the paint is quite thick to poured neatly into the small hole.

Then, push in the spout and twist it tight, releasing the handle just enough to start pumping. You need to pump according the to the instructions and depending on how much paint you have in the container. For our amount, it said 20 pumps.

Off we go. The spray is quite delicate, and to begin with didn’t feel or look right. It was more of a squirt than a spray to be honest but after some fiddling around, it appeared we didn’t have the pressure quite right, and needed to pump another 10 times or so to get this correct. At this point, we had a good spray.

How to Use the Cuprinol Spray and Brush:

After spraying a few of rows of the fence panel, I used the brush to go over it and even it all up, making use of any spare paint. Whilst it’s not as quick as simply spraying, the system is quicker than just using a brush. (We tested this!).

What we did notice is that you’ll use a lot more paint than you would normally, so you need to be prepared for this, both mentally and financially. I was seriously surprised that the 5L tin only covered 3 of our 6ft fence panels.

But then, as my husband rightly pointed out, it is rough sawn wood that hasn’t been painted for many years. It was always going to need a lot of paint for a good coverage.

The next day, after a night of drying out time, I’m really pleased with the finish. I’m loving the dark seasoned oak colour and think it’s really revamped the fence. I’m off to the shops to get another tin to finish the other panels later this week.

I guess the only other thing I wanted to mention is the cleaning up. It takes a while to get the whole system clean again so you need to prepare yourself for that. It’s not as quick as cleaning off a few brushes and takes a fair bit of energy and reading of the instructions, particularly if you want to be able to use it again.
