How to Make your Own Lights

Lighting is so important in a room scheme. But often so overlooked. It’s usually the last thing we all think of, even though we’re always being told it should be the first. So, how do you add good lighting to your space, and how do you ensure you’re including something interesting and unique? Well, let me introduce you to Urban Cottages Industries, their lighting products with a full on industrial vibe, and a company with a darn good ethos too.

How To Make Your Own Lights

Urban Cottage Industries is a leading lighting brand in the UK, allowing you to create unique and unrivalled lighting through online configuration options. Their Made For You, Modular and Designer collections are available online from Urban Cottage Industries and in-store via Heal’s branches across the UK.

So you have complete control over the look and feel of the lighting for your own home. No need to be dictated to by size, height and shape of a preconfigured piece, the website allows you to make the choices that fit your scheme, offering a completely bespoke light in an on-trend industrial design.

Creating your Light:

The first thing that strikes you is the service. Create a light of your choice through the online configuration tool, and Urban Cottage Industries will assemble it, test  and certify it to BS EN 60598,, and then dispatch it for next working day delivery. They are the only UK company able to offer this service.

So how does it work? Well you start by choosing the overall style of lamp, from enamel to metal, to glass and cage pendants. There are many to choose from, and certainly something for everyone. Many of us are loving the bare bulb industrial look right now, and it’s one that lends itself to many different home styles, not just the industrial.

You can also select one of the Maria Steampunk 3 or 5 holder pendants lights in different finishes and configure this to create a bespoke lamp too.

Next, once you’ve chosen your pendant or light style, the configuration tool allows you to select your own choice for each of the different components making up your light fitting. Depending on the type of light style you’ve chosen, you can be asked for the style and colour of the shade, the style of lamp holder and ceiling rose, as well as the type and length of lighting cable, plus bulb style.

It’s a really comprehensive tool, and one which allows the customer to visualise and customise their final selections. If you don’t like a particular combination, try again with a difference selection until you find the light that fits your home exactly. Be as bold and as daring as you like and create something truly bespoke, suited to your taste and designs.

Now if you enjoy assembling light parts yourself (I know my husband would enjoy this part) then you can choose to receive the components disassembled. Or for £12 the team will assemble and test for you. I think that’s a great fee and an amazing service, delivered to your door the next working day.

And there you have it. A completely bespoke light fighting, made just for you.

Do go and check them out to create your own bespoke lighting for your next decor project.

Urban Cottage Industries was born in 2007 as the Historic Lighting company and took on several forms over the next few years, ultimately focusing on Factorylux lighting from 2014 in its base just outside Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. Major investment in people, tooling and technology means that it can offer unrivalled order fulfillment and exceptional customer service. It’s a company completely co-owned by its employees, all of whom reside in the UK.

When design is important to you, it can be so difficult to find lighting that is just that bit special and unusual (I speak from experience ;-). Bespoke design is definitely worth considering.
