2. There Is a Light Show Through the Vents

Hold a brushed tool up to the light while it runs and you will see a steady soft orange flicker through the cooling vents. That is normal. What is not normal is a continuous shower of bright sparks, often noisy enough to hear over the motor itself.

The brush-wear smell is more electronic – closer to a soldering iron – and it lingers after the tool is switched off. Once a brush is worn far enough for the spring to ride directly on the commutator, the spring overheats. That is the smell.

If you notice it after a short run rather than at the end of a long job, take it as a warning. The tool is asking for the £6 fix before something further-reaching gives way.

5. It Runs for Thirty Seconds and Then Cuts Out

Higher-end tools have thermal protection that cuts the motor when current draw spikes. Worn brushes increase the load the motor has to push against, and the protection does its job. You wait a minute, the tool runs again briefly, the cycle repeats.
