How to Create a Living Room that Feels like a Snug

There is something deeply comforting about stepping into a room that feels like a snug. It is a space that invites you to slow down, relax and enjoy the warmth of your home.

The good news is that you do not need to live in a cottage or period property to achieve this feeling. With the right design choices any living room can be transformed into a cocooning retreat. Interior designer Ina Appleby from Studio Appleby shares her top tips.

Use ambient lighting for warmth and depth

Lighting is one of the most powerful tools when creating a snug atmosphere. Instead of relying on a single bright ceiling light think in layers.

Soft pools of light from table lamps or floor lamps create an inviting glow and help to define different areas of the room. Consider adding dimmer switches so you can control the mood throughout the day. Warm toned bulbs are essential as they provide a golden hue that instantly makes the space feel cosier. You might also incorporate subtle wall lights or LED strips to gently highlight shelves or alcoves without overpowering the room.

Build in alcove units for character and function

Alcoves are an often-underused feature that can add depth and charm. Built in units can transform these spaces into practical yet beautiful focal points.

Consider installing shelves for books and treasured objects paired with lower cabinets for hidden storage. This approach keeps clutter at bay while giving the room a curated feel. Painting the alcove units in a slightly darker or contrasting colour to the main walls can draw the eye in and enhance the feeling of intimacy.

Choose furniture that invites you to sink in

The furniture you select will dictate how the room feels the moment you step into it. Opt for pieces that are as comfortable as they are attractive.

Deep sofas with soft upholstery, oversized armchairs, and plenty of cushions will immediately suggest that this is a room for relaxation. A textured rug underfoot and a chunky throw draped over the back of the sofa add more layers of warmth. If space allows, think about adding a footstool or pouffe which can double as extra seating or a place to rest a tray of drinks.

Create a harmonious palette

Colour has a huge influence on mood. For a snug inspired living room lean towards warm tones. Soft neutrals, muted greens and rich earthy shades all help to create a cocooning feel.

Avoid stark white as it can feel cold and instead choose off white or cream for your walls. Pairing these with natural materials such as wood and wool will deepen the sense of comfort.

Make it personal

A snug is not only defined by its design elements but by the personal touches that make it yours. Display books that you love, family photographs or art that makes you smile. Add a basket of blankets within easy reach for chilly evenings. Fresh flowers or a small plant will bring a bit of life and softness to the room too.

By layering lighting, making clever use of alcoves, and choosing furniture that encourages you to sink in, you can transform a standard living room into a space that feels like a snug. It is a room that will welcome you home at the end of the day and invite you to stay a little longer.
