Today I want to show you a little makeover I’ve been working on, in collaboration with Urbanara. I have a corner in my living room that has been feeling a little unloved since I bought some new shelves and it really needed some attention. When Urbanara asked me to help them celebrate their 6th Birthday, I was more than happy to join in the fun. We spend a huge amount of time in this room, both as a family and individually. I often work in here in the daytime too if I want a change from my office, so it’s really important to me that the space feels comfortable, homely, practical and well designed. This corner of the living room definitely wasn’t feeling any of that.
It felt very mismatched and unfinished. I hadn’t found the right pieces with which to decorate the shelves, the cushions were old and from the old colour scheme and whilst I love the rug, it felt a little overpowering with no other coordinating items.
It all just looked a little bit empty and every time I came in here it bothered me. It’s the first thing your eye is drawn to as you walk into the room. For my home to be a happy space to me, I like to feel peaceful in the room, and love every piece of it.
I’d put up some new blue artwork before Christmas, added the rug and the shelves but hadn’t got round to dressing the shelves properly or adding some coordinating cushions. The fireplace around this area felt very bare too.
So with the help of some gorgeous products from Urbanara, I was able to tie in the blue colour scheme, add some comfort and style and really make this corner a happy space in the room.
Here’s how it looked afterwards.
One of the main issues I had in this corner was lighting. Once the shelves came in, there was nowhere to put a lamp – the gap in between the shelves wasn’t wide enough for anything I had, and anyway all that lovely light would have been soaked up from the shelf above. So the answer was a floor lamp. This one, the Skaro Floor Lamp in polished brass is divine. With 2 directional lights you can fix the lighting exactly where you need it. So I have one pointing onto the sofa for task lighting, helping us read, eat, work on laptops etc, and then the other points more to the shelves to help highlight the pieces on there.
Next let’s talk cushions! These huge, soft, quidgy numbers are Suri cushions in blue grey velvet with a grey piping. They are the most comfortable cushions in the most beautiful velvet. Not too thin and not too bulky, they work well on the leather sofa, and don’t slip and slide around either. I’ve mixed up the textures and added in the geometric wool Farum cushion too for a different effect. This one is also feather filled and the combination of the textures means they feel great and as I mentioned, they stay put on a leather sofa. Finally the sofa gets an added comfy factor with the addition of the Miramar navy blue wool throw. Perfect for snuggling and keeping cosy on a cold winter’s evening.
As you can see I’ve also gone out and bought myself a few new plants. Ever since I went to a flower arranging session last year I’ve vowed to increase the number of plants I have in the house, and to look after them better too. I had the baskets and plant bags hanging around so just bought plants I knew would fit. The artwork came from a cute and quirky advent calendar at Christmas and I just picked up some very cheap frames so I could add some colour to the shelves and break up the displays. Everything else I already had around the house somewhere.
If you follow and read the blog regularly you’ll know how much I like a contemporary look and the geometric trend in particular. So to finish off the shelving I picked these two white vases from the Katsura collection and cute blue Onuma geo bowl too. I must say I’m incredibly impressed with the vases, they are so chunky and solid, very good value indeed.
So what do you think of my new happy corner? I can’t tell you how pleased I am with it. The girls love the cushions (they are so drawn to soft, cuddly textures) and I’m so pleased with the way the blue ties in with the rest of the pieces I already had.
As I mentioned, Urbanara is celebrating it’s 6th Birthday and part of that celebration means you can shop all of the pieces I’ve chosen and more with a wonderful 20% discount. I curated the collection to help you pick and coordinate a blue living room like mine so do go along and take a browse.
