The summer may be a fading memory but that doesn’t mean we have to stop thinking about our next holiday, right? Welcome back to my series on finding your best UK holiday cottage, and to the next location on my tour around the British Isles. If you’ve read my previous posts (the full list of properties and locations already covered is at the bottom of this post) then you’ll know that I love the hunt for a great holiday home. I’ve spent over 10 years hunting out the very best for me and my family, focusing on great locations, stylish interiors and practical yet interesting features.
With the autumn/winter season looming for us now in the UK, it’s the perfect time to either book yourself a winter trip (I’ve had some incredible cottage holidays during the October and February half terms) or start thinking about next Spring and Summer. The good properties ALWAYS book up in advance so now is definitely the time to secure your holiday home for next season. But let’s get back to the here and now, and see what I’ve found for this month.
This month’s featured property is Wolborough House in South Devon from Discovery Holiday Homes.
This property is something truly special. And not one to be overlooked. Wolborough House is an Edwardian mansion sleeping 16 perched high above Torbay, with unparalleled views of the ocean and Brixham coastline. It’s the perfect home for celebrations, so if you have a special birthday, anniversary or get together planned, look no further.
Built by the wealthy Charles Hellier in 1910, the mansion is accessed by private road, has extensive grounds and manages to find the balance between modern interiors and its original features. The property simply oozes period charm, from solid oak pannelling, to decorative plasterwork and high ceilings, and huge period windows framing the incredible views.
Let’s take a little look around.
Location:
The views really are something special from this location. Look down to Brixham harbour, access the pretty Breakwater beach below or take a trip to Torbay, known as the capital of South Devon and the Devon Rivieria. It’s a beautiful part of the coast, often with lovely weather and not one to be missed. I’ve holidayed in this area a few times and it is stunning.
Accommodation:
The property is split over 3 floors, the lower ground, ground and first floors. With 8 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and a floor dedicated to fun, it will take you a while to explore the full layout of this impressive home. The lower ground floor, or fun floor as it’s also known, houses the games area and pool. This is also where the live-in housekeepers reside, so there’s always someone on hand should you need them.
Bedrooms:
Most bedrooms are on the first floor, apart from one which is located on the lower ground. All are decorated with modern fresh interiors that reflect the age and style of the property.
The whole house is incredibly family friendly, with some bedrooms housing twin beds for the children, and others featuring a double. All are tastefully and comfortably decorated and have lovely original features.
The views from many of the rooms are breathtaking.
Bathrooms have a wonderful period feel but are recently refurbished with modern, contemporary fittings.
Living Space:
It’s the ground floor where the home really comes alive I think. An impressive hallways leads onto a sitting room, drawing-room, pool room and country kitchen. The drawing-room houses all of your technology essentials, as well as giving you 180 degree views over Brixham Breakwater.
The lower ground floor, or fun floor is where you’ll find yourself on rainy days. Or for that matter, any time of the day. The children will absolutely adore this. A heated indoor pool for your own private use, a bar, table tennis, a playroom for the children including chalkboard wall, and a well equipped gym are all yours to use at your leisure during your stay.
Kitchen:
I always love to look at the kitchen of my prospective holiday home and make sure it has every mod con you need. This luxury kitchen has it all including an area for extra prep, should you wish to use or hire some additional help.
Outdoors:
The grounds of Wolborough House are extensive. I mentioned the private road, leading up to the property, but there are also areas for outdoor dining, including a brick BBQ and roof shelter, and wonderful, lustrous grounds in which to walk and marvel over the views.
This really is an incredible property. The location and size make it a space where you can create memories with family and friends that last a lifetime.
Prices range from £3990 – £6996 at the peak of the season. Remember this is a huge space, and one you can share with many other families, giving you the best experience, and sharing the cost.

Wow! It is a truly incredible house. This has become my dream home to live in. Everything seems to be perfect. Excellent interior designing in each and every room, a separate area for playing, gymming, swimming and the most importantly superb view from outside. I am definitely going to book this wonderful mansion soon.
