Use Minimal Colours

When it comes to choosing the colours for a room, remember to choose very carefully when dealing with a small space. It matters whereabouts you use the paint and in what shades for how the eye will perceive the size of the room.

As a general rule, the fewer colours used, the more the room will feel spacious and calm. The best advice is to paint a small room in one colour all around, including the walls, skirting and the ceiling.

The best shades for this include bright white, cream, blush pink and beige shades. If you like, try to match any furniture with this shade so that they ‘blend in’, creating the illusion of a bigger space.

Open Up the Space

Sometimes, it’s the type of windows and doors you have fitted into a room which can give the biggest impact to the size. For example, those rooms with small windows let in minimal light, casting shadows and giving a dimmer feel. This instantly lets the mind think the room is small.

The key is to create visual space and light where possible. Look at doors for living room and dining areas which have glass panes, letting in light from the surrounding rooms.

With kitchens or dining areas – or even living rooms depending on the layout of your home – look at bi-fold doors to open up into the garden or conservatory. These open up all the way across a wall. They can instantly transform one wall of your room into views of your outdoor space.

The beauty of internal bi-folds is that they elegantly fit into rooms, giving a premium, luxury update. When closed, one wall is pretty much replaced with floor to ceiling windows, letting in as much light as possible.

Consider an Extreme Declutter

When it comes to making a room look larger, less is definitely more. Be very careful when choosing how to fill a small room, remembering to cut back on ‘accessories’ – ornaments, photo frames, vases and decorative items.

Instead, look to limit accessories and leave empty space where possible on shelves and side tables to create a light airy look. Look at built-in shelves, and place mirrors strategically so they bounce light across the room.

Use Minimal Prints

When shopping for bedding, cushions, rugs and even wallpaper, look for minimal prints. Basically, anything that can come with a print needs to be kept as fuss-free as possible to make the room appear bigger.

For small bedrooms, keep your curtains, carpet and bedding as print-free as possible. There’s no harm in small details or little colour splashes and accents, but the general room is that the plainer, the better!

For living rooms, ensure centrepiece rugs and cushions don’t clash with each other, or have loud prints featured. If you do choose to have a print, keep them as matching as possible.

Trick the Eye

There are a few furniture hacks which give a trick to the eye, giving the illusion of larger, taller rooms. One of these is to consider adding floor-to-ceiling or wall-to-wall bookcases. This trick will expand how high your ceilings look, plus it’s a great way to add storage.

Also, installing either a built-in desk that takes up the entire length of a room or expansive countertops in your kitchen, will create the illusion of a long room.

It is also advised not to automatically place your furniture against walls. Sometimes placing a piece at an angle or surrounded by open space, will make a room look bigger.

Remember, step back and assess the room itself for its space, size and light, and be creative accordingly. When armed with a few handy tricks and hacks, you’ll be doubling the look of the room in no time!
