Some great tips in today’s guest article on how to make your kitchen the hub of the home, and the perfect social space too. Enjoy.
Kitchens are no longer just for cooking. These days, they’re the hub of your home. Whether you’re looking to be the hostess with the most-ess, or have a kitchen that’s Pinterest worthy; these seven tips from PD Kitchens will help make your kitchen the perfect social space.
A breakfast bar is the ideal place for friends and family to get together at dinner parties and gatherings; or even just in the morning before you leave the house. Having a breakfast bar coming off of a central island or wrapping around the end of the kitchen can create a clean feel, perfect for a modern look. Add some bar stools for the ultimate social area and your guests will never want to leave. There are breakfast bars or islands to suit any kitchen, big or small.
Think about your seating
It’s important to feel comfortable in the kitchen. Having a place for guests to sit is therefore a necessity. There are lots of different ways you can incorporate seating areas into your kitchen, whether through a set of chairs, a bench or soft furnishings like a sofa.
A great idea for open plan kitchens with large window spaces is a built-in bench. It provides a focal point where people can look out at the view. Bi-folding doors have also become increasingly popular, as it opens up the space and allows for more seating arrangements outside.Image credit: PD Kitchens
Entertainment is key
If you’re planning on hosting parties, pre-drink gatherings or even just cosy nights in, you might want to think about what entertainment systems you can fit. A radio or even a television mounted on the wall is a great idea. This will enable you to play music at the very least, or you could even host a movie night.
Entertainment doesn’t just stop at the sound systems; things like a popcorn machine, chocolate fountain or coffee maker are popular additions to make your kitchen that bit more entertainment-worthy.

If you’re the type of person who loves having people round, you need to make sure that you’ve thought about convenience. By this we mean having lots of accessible charging points for phones. Yes, people are starting to ask for your charger more often than they ask for your Wi-Fi password. It’s a serious issue.
Plugs are also great for entertainment systems to be stationed, as well as convenient for kitchen appliances. Think about having plugs put in on the sides of your island for easy use.
Clever lighting points
Yes there is the given of lighting on the ceiling, but having clever lighting scattered throughout the kitchen will really set the mood of a well-designed space. Spotlights under the cabinets will look great later in the evening.
You could even create a central point with a light feature over your kitchen island/breakfast bar, as shown in the shaker style image below.
