So the sun has been shining and some of you may have even been on your holidays already. I know I have. If you’re still looking around your home and wondering how to inject some summer freshness into the space, look no further. I have put together some of my favourite top tips to help you.
Perhaps you’re looking for a little new trend inspiration? Or some ideas on how to go about decluttering your kids’ bedrooms? If you want to make the most of the summer light too then do read on, and I’d love you to leave a comment if you find any of these tips inspiring or helpful.
Declutter and Reorganise:
I know I say it time and time again, but you really can’t beat a proper declutter if you’re wanting to spruce up your home. Decluttering isn’t just about tidying up, it’s about identifying objects that you no longer need, or that have become surplus to requirements. How you decide that really depends on how ruthless you want to be. If you haven’t worn something for a year, ditch it. If you have more than one of a particular item in the kitchen, get rid. Streamlining your belongings can be a cathartic experience and one you’ll relish doing. Even if it does mean several trips to the charity shop.
The summer light takes no prisoners and this is the time of year when every smear, smudge and stain shows up in the home. It’s time to get busy and get cleaning. If you missed out on your spring clean, it really is time to dig out the Flash and give the place a little sparkle; your home will thank you for it. After the house has been closed up over the Winter, it needs some serious freshening up. Tackle the problem with some Febreze power, open the windows and let the Summer in.
If you love following trends, how about embracing one of my favourites: Flamingos. Pink flamingos are everywhere at the moment, and are set to be huge for the summer party season. I particularly love the range at Rose and Grey if you would like to take a look. If you love a pop of bright pink, a bit of kitsch decor or just love birds in your home decor, why not give them a go.
Floors and More:
If, like me, your family has been bringing in the Winter mud and dust for months now, it’s time to get shampooing those carpets. It’s incredible how much dirt they hold and you’ll be shocked at how clean they can be. Alternatively, now could be the time to invest in some wooden or vinyl flooring. Home renovation projects can be much easier at this time of year (see below) so laying a new wood floor will really keep your home clean and fresh all summer long.
If you’re still hanging onto your Winter woolly throws, faux fur cushions and brushed cotton sheets, now’s the time to dry clean them, pack them away and bring out your lighter fabrics. You might still want a beautiful throw on a cool summer evening of course, but go for something lighter and breathable, then add some cotton cushions covers and a fresh, summer duvet cover, and you’re all set.
Another big trend that’s been building for a while now, is the love of plants in the home. You may have always had plants in your home, but if not, now’s the time to embrace foliage and bring a few succulents, blooms or terrariums into your home. Adding some summer colour, and greens in particular will give your home a lush, outdoor feel. Perfect for the summer months.
Alongside carpets, as we mentioned above, curtains and blinds can hold lots of smells and nasty odours from the Winter months. So, it’s either time to include them in the deep clean, or change them up for the Summer season. With the longer, warmer days you won’t need such heavy fabric so go for something lighter and more airy with a brighter pattern or print.
The nautical look lives on. If you love bringing a little pieces of the coast into your home you still can, and it’s a great way to embrace all things Summer. Keep it minimal and contemporary for a really up to date look, or go for it with shells, beach huts and rope for a really authentic look.
Inject Summer Colour:
If you’re feeling a bit bored with the colour schemes in your home, and want to inject a little summer colour, why not think about a typical summer inspired palette? Think of beautiful lush greens, mixed with a variety of blues (as above) and finished with some natural stones and sand hues. If you’re more into bright pops, take your inspiration from the stunning flower gardens. Look at how nature mixes its colours and you can’t go wrong.
If the weather will hold, it’s time dust off your barbecue, rescue your picnic tableware and start preparing for summer garden parties. Check your parasol and garden chair cushions. Invest in some new if you need them or give existing ones a good clean. Ensure you have enough tableware for the Summer, and all of your guests.
Finally, if you’ve been planning any major home renovations now is the time to execute them. The warmer, drier weather gives many more opportunities to carry out the bigger projects, whether it’s new windows, a loft conversion or installing a new bathroom or kitchen. You’ll not just be preparing your home for Summer but for the next few years too.
